In training with Lucy for the OX5 RUN
Who knew the grounds of Blenheim Palace had so many hills! As Allen Associates looks ahead to the much-anticipated OX5 RUN in aid of Oxford Children's Hospital on Sunday, 20th March 2022, we chat to one of the team, Lucy Saunders, to find out what she's doing to prepare for the annual fun run through the grounds of Blenheim Palace – and how she's planning to get up those legendary hills!
In training for the OX5 RUN… with Lucy Saunders, a Resourcer at Allen Associates.
So Lucy, have you taken part in the OX5 RUN before?
Never, this is my first one!
Are you bringing anyone with you to boost Allen Associates' team on the day?
I’m taking part with my fiancé Jon, who I can guarantee will leave me as soon as he hears the starting whistle! He’s very competitive and a much better runner than me.
Are you planning to run or walk the five mile course?
I plan to run for as long as I possibly can. Although, I’ve heard there are hills. Big hills. So that plan might not last very long. Let’s just say I'm aiming for a safe jog.
Is running new to you?
I’m a huge lover of long walks, particularly over the fells, but I’ve never been a runner, or raced in any sport in fact, so this feels very new. I’m comfortable until I’m running with other people then I start to feel the pressure.
What are you doing to prepare?
I’m currently doing the couch to 5k up and down the lane next to my house, in preparation. I’m aware the OX5 RUN is five miles…I’m hoping adrenaline will get me over the finishing line!
How are you finding the training?
It’s opened up a whole new world for me and I have so many questions. Is it strange if I run without music? Where do I put my keys? Do I look weird? When running past another runner, how much is too much?
Is it difficult to keep yourself motivated?
As soon as I started training, it had a huge impact on my wellbeing. I couldn’t see the point beforehand – it just all looked like such hard work, but as soon as I came back from that first jog, I felt more energised, I was more efficient at work, I wanted to eat better and the night’s sleep was glorious!
Why did get involved in the OX5 RUN?
I’ll be honest, it was the exact excuse I needed to get fitter, and it’s for such a brilliant cause. Everyone at Allen Associates is so supportive of anyone who gets involved with this kind of thing and I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t!
Any final thoughts?
If you see me slowing down, just shout ‘think of the wedding bod’, but don’t expect a reply through the wheezes!
