Beware the pitfalls of using AI for job applications
If you’ve used ChatGPT or other AI-generated tools to help speed up the job application process, check grammar or bolster content, you’re not alone. In fact, we’re seeing a steady increase in the number of AI-generated CVs and covering letters so it’s definitely a trend.
The problem is that AI-generated content is usually quite easy to spot, immediately raising a red flag that the candidate may not be as skilled or experienced as they’re claiming to be.
Telltale signs include unusually sophisticated language or inappropriate use of certain terminology – and sometimes the inclusion of ‘Americanisms’ where you would expect to see English words.
They also often lack the depth of research, attention to detail or personalisation that you would expect to see from a candidate who is genuinely interested in the role and wants to impress a prospective employer.
Five ways to ensure AI helps rather than hinders your job application
If you are convinced that AI is the way to go, please consider the following tips to help you make it work to your advantage.
1. Don’t just accept AI-generated responses
The golden rule is to read AI-generated content carefully; never just copy and paste it into your application. Read the wording carefully to make sure it’s relevant and appropriate to the specifics of the role and organisation you are applying for. You will almost certainly have to reword or adapt it.
Make sure that whatever wording you end up with, resonates well with you and is a true reflection of what you think, feel or believe.
It also needs to sound like you!
2. Tailor the content to suit the specifics of the role
AI-generated job applications often feel generic and bland. While they may stimulate your thinking and provide additional information or structure, it’s important to tailor each and every application to suit the specifics of the job that you are applying for.
Remember to demonstrate that you’ve understood the job description and know something about the employer and the sector they’re operating in.
You will also need to tailor your application to emphasise your most relevant skills and experience, so it’s clear why you are the right person for the job.
3. Personalise your job application
Employers are increasingly looking for personality and enthusiasm. They are looking for the right people to fit with their culture and teams – so don’t be afraid to give employers a sense of the real you.
If you rely on AI to generate content for you, there is a significant risk that you will be found out – or come across as dull or disinterested. There is also less chance of you standing out from other candidates.
4. Understand the role and industry sector
You are best placed to demonstrate your understanding of the role and industry sector, drawing on your real life experiences of working in similar jobs or environments. Only you can use these personal experiences to support your application in the most appropriate way.
In addition, there is often specific terminology which people use when working in certain roles and sectors. AI is unlikely to be able to pick up on these nuances so make sure that you use relevant language in an appropriate way.
5. Proof read carefully
Never submit a job application without proof reading it first. It’s also worth asking someone else to read it and give you feedback. AI and other tools can be a big help when it comes to spelling and grammar, but they don’t always get it right.
Ultimately, you’re aiming to produce a job application that is well-written, professional, clear, easy to follow, and the best possible representation of you.
To AI or not to AI – that is the question!
AI is now part of our everyday lives and it’s inevitable that some candidates will want to use it to speed up or refine their job search or help them to put together their job applications.
Just don’t forget the human touch. People employ people – and if you can find common ground and shared values, that’s half the battle won.
Employers will be looking for the person behind the job application so even if AI gets you a foot in the door, it can’t hold your hand at interview. Better to be your true self and trust your recruitment consultant to match you with the role and the employer that’s right for you.
